The U.S. senator was to blame for the car accident in which twenty-eight-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne died. Ted Kennedy drove his car, in which Mary Jo was a passenger, off a bridge. Even though the senator claimed to have tried to rescue her from drowning, he only reported the accident ten hours later.
